Carrying on from the idea of the re-programmable guitar pedal, here is a company doing tiny, low power 500 mhz and 1.2ghz machines for 200 and 400 dollars:

Stick Linux/ supercollider or Linux/ PD etc on there, set it up to auto boot an effect or somesuch, maybe with some sort of simple usb gamepad controller and its a serious re-programmable effects unit. Could also do video processing maybe?? with that hardware MP4 decoder??
And what about strapping a small touch screen LCD on top? Quite like the no screen vibe tho. In theory you could ship new effects as boot images that could be booted from compact flash or something.
